New Discussion Group about Spiritual Direction for GLBT People

.

Integrating oneís sexual orientation and spirituality can be a difficult challenge, and often times our sexual orientation can result in religious oppression and alienation. A new group dis- cussion class is set to begin soon which will offer participants from diverse faith traditions and spiritual backgrounds an opportunity to gather together as a community of believers in a confidential, sacred space to listen for the voice of God in one anotherís experiences.

.

The class is an invitation to be part of a serious group of people who want to grow and deepen their relationships with God and one another by reflecting about their journeys of faith. It is set to begin in late March will meet on Thursday evenings from 7pm to 9pm at 48 East Hollister (across the street from the Church of Our Saviour). The cost will be $200 and, to facilitate sharing and confidentiality, participation limited will be no more than seven people.

.

The group will be facilitated by Fred Middendorf. Fred works as a spiritual director and a self-employed writer and photo researcher. He is a graduate of the Spiritual Direction Practicum of the Archdiocese of Louisville and is also a member of Spiritual Directors International. He has several years of experience teaching co-counseling programs to men and is a Board member of Cincinnati PFLAG.

.

To find out more about this Spiritual Direction opportunity, or to set up an interview (a re-quirement for admission to the group), please contact Fred at 321-3510 no later than March 18th.

Unitarian Universalist Churches Offering GLBT Inclusive Sexuality Education Classes for Teens

.

About 40 youth from area Unitarian Universalist churches have been gathering together on Sunday afternoons to learn more about healthy sexual relationships, embracing diversity and accepting and affirming their own sexuality.

.

For the third year, member churches of the Unitarian Universalist Council of Cincinnati are sponsoring a program called "Our Whole Lives" or OWL for teens in the 7th to 9th grades. The class, which includes a full orientation for parents, began in January and runs for 3 months. It offers young people the opportunity to learn about a wide range of topics, everything from basic anatomy to contraception to religious and cultural issues.

.

On a recent Sunday afternoon at the Northern Hills Fellowship to topic was homosexuality. The youth discussed a chapter from their OWL handbook and also their own personal feelings on the subject. This was followed by a panel discussion which included a lesbian couple, a gay couple and a transgender woman who are members of local Unitarian Universalist churches. The conversation ranged from coming out stories to holy unions to discrimination. The teens asked thoughtful and respectful questions and some shared their personal experiences responding to homophobia at school.

.

Barbara Hadden, Director of Religious Education at St. Johnís Unitarian Church, says "OWL is a great opportunity to teach our teens about sex based firmly on the values of respect, responsibility, justice and inclusiveness."
